Union Pacific engine 9950 sits sadly on the sidelines at the Western America Railroad Museum in Barstow, CA during May, 2022 right next to the very same operating lines it used to roll on.
This freight locomotive is a 3,000 horsepower, 185 ton machine built in the 1980s for one of the predecessors of the Union Pacific Railroad, called Missouri Pacific. The UP9950 was originally MP3320 and then received the number UP4320 (which you can still see near the top of the front of the engine) after the MoPac merger. It is a SD40-2 without dynamic brakes as delivered to the MoPac in 1980 and was formally retired on 08.21.00.
While there is a lot of controversy over getting a Missouri engine for a Barstow museum, I just like the faded yellow of the paint and the juxtaposition of their small fleet of equipment on rails to the sprawling Union Pacific rail yard behind it.
